COVID Vaccine Update 25th June 2021

Covid-19 vaccination programme
Brighton and Hove update
25 June 2021

Across Sussex this weekend we are holding the ‘Big Walk-in’.

Many of our vaccination sites are opening up for walk in and people will be able to simply turn up and get their Covid-19 vaccination, without needing to book an appointment in advance.

Sites offering walk in vaccinations can be found easily via our website – where you can see the locations, days and times that sites are open this weekend.

Walk ins in West Sussex this weekend include:

  • Friday 25 June – 10.30-14.30 – St Peter’s Church, York Place, Brighton BN1 4GU (For people aged 40 and over)
  • Saturday 26 June, 10.30-14.30, Whitehawk Football Club Community Day, Brighton (all adults, tickets for the community day must be booked online in advance
  • Saturday 26 June, 10-14.30, Hove Lawns, Hove (for all adults)
  • Sunday 27 June, 10.30-14.30 – Brunswick Square, Brighton BN3 1EJ (For people aged 40 and over)

People who attend a walk-in clinic for their first dose will have their vaccination record updated online and will then be able to book in their second dose appointment using the national booking system.

Second jabs are also available at some of the walk-ins, if it has been at least eight weeks since the first dose for people aged over 40 and those in the first priority groups, and 12 weeks for people aged under 40.

All adults can still book at one of the vaccination centre, pharmacy or GP led sites that are available through the national booking service or through the GP led site directly.

People urged not to forget second vaccination

As lockdown measures are relaxed and summer weather does appear, we are seeing some people not attend their second appointment.

Getting the second dose is vital to getting longer lasting and maximum protection offered by the vaccines, with recent research also showing they are highly effective against the Delta/Indian strain of the virus.

Studies have found the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to be 96% effective against hospitalisation after two doses, while the Oxford-AztraZenaca is 92% effective.

People aged 40 and over are now able to have their second jab from eight weeks after their first – moving it forward from the original 12 week period. This extends the group after people aged 50 and over were able to do this last month.

If you have booked your appointments through the national booking system, you can use the website or call 119 to move your second dose forward.

If you had your first vaccination from a GP led team, you will be contacted as quickly as possible to rearrange your second dose.

Whether you are moving it forward, or have an appointment booked, everyone is urged to attend their second dose appointment.

Whitehawk Football Club and NHS team up to provide COVID-19 vaccinations this weekend

Whitehawk Football Club will be one of the first Football Club’s in the country to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to local residents at a football match.

The Brighton based Isthmian League south east club host a special ‘Fan’s Community Day’ match on Saturday, June 26, and during the event COVID-19 vaccines will be available for free for local residents.

All adults are now eligible for their COVID-19 vaccine, and the NHS team will be on hand during the Community Day to offer first vaccinations for anyone eligible who is yet to receive it.

People receiving their first dose will be prioritised but the team may also be able to support people to receive their second vaccine if they had Pfizer for their first and are after eight weeks from their first jab – if vaccine supply on the day allows.

The service is being offered by Community not-for profit Social Enterprise Group HERE who have been running vaccination services at Brighton Racecourse and from a mobile ambulance and bus across the city.

It is the first time the NHS in Sussex will team up with the Eastbourne District Scout First Aid Association, who are supporting with the vehicle and helping with the set up on the day at the Club’s TerraPura Ground.
